Selection

A feature that designates a specific area of an image so that edits apply only within that region.

A selection designates a specific region of an image where editing operations will take effect. Once a selection is created, pixels outside the boundary are protected, and operations like fill, filters, and color adjustments apply only to the selected area.

Selection tools come in several types: rectangular (box selection), elliptical (circular selection), freehand (lasso), and automatic (magic wand based on color similarity). For precise selections along subject edges, pen tools and magnetic selection tools are effective.

Selections can be saved as masks for later reuse. The feather function softens selection boundaries, creating a natural gradient at the edit edge. The image crop tool uses rectangular selections as its fundamental operation to remove unwanted areas.
