GPS Tag

Location data (latitude, longitude, altitude) stored in EXIF metadata, recording where a photograph was taken. Also called a geotag.

A GPS tag (geotag) is location information stored in the GPS IFD (Image File Directory) of EXIF data. It includes fields for latitude (GPSLatitude), longitude (GPSLongitude), altitude (GPSAltitude), and timestamp (GPSTimeStamp). Smartphones record this automatically when location services are enabled.

Accuracy depends on GPS reception: typically within a few meters outdoors and tens of meters indoors. Photo management apps use GPS tags to plot images on maps, making travel photo organization intuitive.

However, publishing photos with GPS tags from home or work locations can expose personal routines. Stripping GPS data with the EXIF removal tool before sharing online is strongly recommended. Both iOS and Android allow disabling location recording in camera settings.
